β- Carotene (C40H56) is one of carotenoids. It is an orange fat soluble compound. It is the most common and stable natural pigment in nature. A member of the family of natural chemicals such as carotenes or carotenoids. It is abundant in plants, making fruits and vegetables full of yellow and orange. The appearance of the pure product is red purple to dark red crystalline powder with a slight specific odor. β- The dilute carotene solution is orange yellow and easily soluble in organic solvents such as dichloromethane, chloroform and carbon disulfide. When the solution concentration increases, it is orange, and it can be slightly red due to the polarity of the solvent. Unstable in the presence of oxygen, heat and light. It is stable in weak base.
β- Carotene added to animal food as feed additive has certain specific functions for animals. If in use, it does not contain β- Cows fed with carotene feed often observe "asymptomatic" fever, delayed ovulation, follicular cyst, delay and reduce the formation of corpus luteum. In serious cases, it can lead to reproductive disorder and placental stagnation.
